Drift Catcher

Support

Be the catcher of your drift. Drift Catcher is a quiet macOS menu-bar app that helps you notice when your focus slips during deep work — and, with an on-device AI, understand why. Everything runs on your Mac.

Quick start

  1. Click the Drift Catcher icon in the menu bar.
  2. Type what you're working on, pick a length (25 / 45 / 90 min), and press Start.
  3. Work as usual. If you drift to a distracting app or site for a couple of minutes, the screen edges gently darken as a soft reminder.
  4. Seeing a false alarm? Hover the amber dot in the bottom-left and click "I'm still working," or press ⌥⌘D. Need a breather? Click Take a break.
  5. When the session ends, a short reflection appears — what pulled you away, and a gentle suggestion. Give it a 👍/👎.

Permissions

  • Screen Recording (required for drift detection). Drift Catcher reads only the title of your active window (e.g. a browser tab name) to judge whether you're on task. It never captures, stores, or sends any screen images. Grant it during the Welcome screen, or in System Settings ▸ Privacy & Security ▸ Screen & System Audio Recording. (You may need to quit and reopen the app once after granting.)
  • Notifications (optional). Only used to tell you a session has ended.

First launch & the on-device model

  • On macOS 26 with Apple Intelligence, no download is needed.
  • On macOS 14–15 (or if Apple Intelligence is unavailable), Drift Catcher downloads a small AI model (~3 GB) once, on first run. The Welcome screen shows progress. After that, everything works offline.

Insights & export

Right-click the menu-bar icon → Insights (or the chart button in the popover) to see your focus patterns — sessions, total focus time, what tends to distract you, your best hours. It's computed and stored only on your Mac. You can export a JSON or Markdown snapshot anytime; nothing is ever sent automatically.

Managing your data

Settings ▸ Data retention lets you keep history for 7 days, 30 days, or forever. Delete all data removes everything immediately.

FAQ

Does Drift Catcher send my data anywhere?

No. There's no tracking and no analytics. The only network request the app ever makes is the one-time model download (on macOS without Apple Intelligence), which sends no information about you.

Why does it need Screen Recording?

It's the only sandbox-safe way on macOS to read the active window's title, which is how it tells on-task from off-task. No screen content is captured or stored.

It dimmed when I was actually working.

Click "I'm still working" (or ⌥⌘D). Drift Catcher will treat that screen as on-topic for the rest of the session.

The dimming is too strong / too sensitive.

Sensitivity defaults are gentle; finer controls may arrive in a later update. Email us your preferences — it helps.

Which languages are supported?

The interface and AI reflections support English, 한국어, 日本語, and Español.
